The 2009 Barbaresco is absolutely remarkable for the way it carersses the palate with endless layers of sweet red fruit

which is not surprising given the fact that the Chave family has more experience than just about anybody in the winemaking world (the domaine was founded in 1481 - nearly a decade before Christopher Columbus discovered America

but the 2011 is a bit less complete than I would have liked

Floral black fruit and spice mark the nose here, which is followed by superb extract of pinot flavors which completely buffers the dense but fine tannins and somewhat mutes the underlying minerality at the moment.
